MEET YOUR HOSTS
Grant Thomas
Grant survived growing up in Nebraska to accomplish every Midwest kid’s dream - moving away after paying in-state tuition for college. After a year in California, he landed in Denver in the summer of 2016. He is a public school teacher, and has grown accustomed to a semi-willing audience.
Recently (and proudly) 30, Grant lives on Denver’s westside. Famously pet averse and fortunately single, he parents several plants. He hikes, hosts dinner parties, and once met Dave Franco. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education in 2015. 6 feet tall if it matters…
Maia Warner
Maia is originally from the suburbs of Denver, CO and will take any and every opportunity to remind everyone that she is a rare “Colorado Born and Raised” 🙄. Having ADHD and a love of having approximate knowledge of many things as led her into many serendipitous adventures - starting this podcast being one of them. If you’ve ever gone down an internet search rabbit hole, you’ll love the stories she shares.
Outside of the podcast (because once you have a podcast it becomes your whole personality, right?) she lives with her fiancé, Casey, and two dogs, Monet and Bowser. She has a BS in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and works as a Project Engineer for an Engineering Consulting firm (don't ask her what she does for work - she still doesn't know how to define "consultant").
Forget what you think you know about Patty Hearst. This week Maia launches us into Part 1 of the Patty Hearst story. From the headline grabbing antics to the violence the SLA (Symbionese Liberation Army) was willing to (and did) commit. We meet a host of characters who are complex and controversial as we begin to dig into what happens when a young person has Money and a Gun.
How does a millionaire heiress end up robbing banks alongside her kidnappers—and what on earth do plumbing disasters and chaotic book clubs have to do with it? Join hosts Maia and Grant as they hilariously unravel the surreal, shocking saga of Patty Hearst and the radical, oddly theatrical Symbionese Liberation Army. From wild carjackings and infamous shootouts broadcast live on national TV, to unexpected detours about quirky pets, fantasy novels, and DIY home repair nightmares, this episode blends dark humor, personal anecdotes, and unbelievable historical twists into one unforgettable ride. Prepare yourself to laugh, cringe, and question everything you thought you knew about victimhood, radicalization, and the absurdity of revolutionary antics in 1970s America. If you thought history couldn't get weirdly funny—think again! 00:00:00 Intro 00:23:19 Money and a Gun 00:25:00 The 1970s Scene 00:29:44 Cobra Branding 01:08:06 Hearst Kidnapping 01:34:25 Billionaire Ransom 01:47:04 Revolutionary Training 02:41:06 Bank Heist Mayhem 03:05:39 Shootout Showdown 03:20:44 To Be Continued

There is more than one way to win the war. This week Grant dishes to Maia the many fun and scandalous ways the British government tried to convince America to support them during WW2. In the process, they helped elevate some of the 20th century's most prodigious writers. Grab a cocktail, we have some wining and dining to get to. Before James Bond, real British spies were infiltrating American high society, shifting public opinion, and even seducing elites to sway the tide of war. British intelligence launched a secret propaganda campaign in the U.S., planting pro-war sentiment in newspapers and leveraging high-profile influencers to change minds. Even beloved author Roald Dahl played a role in this covert operation, using his charm to get close to key decision-makers. And if that wasn’t wild enough, Britain also trained elite assassins—including some with a shocking twist. This episode dives deep into the untold stories of espionage, manipulation, and real-life tactics that inspired one of the most famous fictional spies in history. 00:00:00 Catch-Up 00:30:32 Shaken, Not Stirred 00:34:40 Seduction 00:42:35 Wartime Contributions 00:55:54 Roald Dahl’s Secret Life 01:17:51 Special Operations Tactics 01:21:03 Final Thoughts
This week Maia entertains and terrifies with a story of a secret group, with too much power, money, and free time. A not-so-secret society. A party, and the worst people you know were invited. What is happening in the woods north of San Francisco? Listen to hear more about a whisper in the woods. 00:00:00 Catch-Up 00:24:29 A Whisper In the Woods 00:40:58 Exclusive Club 00:55:32 Private Playground 00:58:14 Political Powerhouse 01:09:39 Logging Irony 01:17:40 Secret Rituals 01:22:50 Inside Jobs
