Semi-educational and organically funny, “Well, I Laughed” is a podcast for listeners who find themselves in search of a good laugh and their next strange story to tell at parties. Each week one of our hosts shares what they have learned on topics ranging from the Unabomber to Frankenstein. Join Grant, a public school teacher, and Maia, an engineer, as they find the humor in the mundane. Well, I Laughed, and we think you will too. New episodes every Wednesday.

MEET YOUR HOSTS
Grant Thomas
Grant survived growing up in Nebraska to accomplish every Midwest kid’s dream - moving away after paying in-state tuition for college. After a year in California, he landed in Denver in the summer of 2016. He is a public school teacher, and has grown accustomed to a semi-willing audience.
Recently (and proudly) 30, Grant lives on Denver’s westside. Famously pet averse and fortunately single, he parents several plants. He hikes, hosts dinner parties, and once met Dave Franco. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education in 2015. 6 feet tall if it matters…
Maia Warner
Maia is originally from the suburbs of Denver, CO and will take any and every opportunity to remind everyone that she is a rare “Colorado Born and Raised” 🙄. Having ADHD and a love of having approximate knowledge of many things as led her into many serendipitous adventures - starting this podcast being one of them. If you’ve ever gone down an internet search rabbit hole, you’ll love the stories she shares.
Outside of the podcast (because once you have a podcast it becomes your whole personality, right?) she lives with her fiancé, Casey, and two dogs, Monet and Bowser. She has a BS in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and works as a Project Engineer for an Engineering Consulting firm (don't ask her what she does for work - she still doesn't know how to define "consultant").
Who was the Irish Hamilton? Richard Martin was a man of passion. He was just as likely to shoot you in a duel as he was to defend an innocent animal. Sometimes, he'd do both. Find out why was Richard Martin called "Humanity Dick", who founded the ASPCA, and how someone gets the nickname "Hair-Trigger Dick." A listener episode! Listeners of Well, I Laughed share their connections with this week's theme "Down to Business". Polly details an uncomfortably close connection with a man known as Dr. Death. Ashley emailed in about the dangers of donating blood in a story so funny, we almost passed out. Nicole writes in with a friend or foe, deal or no deal story about a high school romance gone wrong. And Warren shares about being the intimidating guy in the parking lot, completely accidentally. All that and more, this week, from Well, I Laughed podcast!

Grant takes the opportunity to share some "weird stories from Australia." He introduces us to an underground, deadly underwater cave system in the middle of a cow field known as "The Shaft" in Australia. Next, he covers the disappearance of Harold Holt. The Australian Prime Minister (and spear fisher) who was abducted by aliens, eaten by a shark, or something way more normal and boring. Finally, we learn about what happens when you try to take on mother nature. Specifically, when you launch "The Great Emu War". Along the way you’ll hear why Grant keeps getting recognized by former students, how Maia’s boomer side emerges in the snack-basket aisle, and what happens when two podcasters debate the morality of road-trip bathroom breaks. Buckle up; it’s a long, strange ride beneath (and sometimes above) the Southern Hemisphere. Plus, stick around for a lightning round on potato loyalties, hot-pot lullabies, and morbidly funny “famous last words”—proof that history pairs perfectly with late-night chaos. This week's episode has a little fun down under!

Was Mulan real? Did Mulan exist? And, if so, how accurate is the movie Mulan? This week we get down to business to uncover the history behind our favorite female warrior. Maia spotlights three extraordinary women whose boldness and brilliance helped reshape East Asian and global history: Tamoe Gozen, a Japanese Samurai from the 12th century, whose bravery and romances were featured in Heike monogatari (The Tale of Heike); Murasaki Shikibu, the author of what's thought of as the world's oldest novel, Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji); and the legendary Hua Mulan, brought to life through a 5th-century poem and her fierce promise to take her father’s place in war. And, of course, we sing a couple of lines from that killer movie soundtrack (singing podcast?). Along the way, they unpack samurai code, Heian-era culture (calligraphy, poetry, doll festivals, and all), and why storytelling remains one of the most powerful weapons in any era—printing press or not. Women in history had something worth fighting for!
